The southern stingray is a moderately sized whiptail stingray native to the western Atlantic Ocean. Southern stingrays spend most of their time in contact with the seafloor, often buried with only its large eyes protruding. Southern stingrays are able to use a sharp, serrated bar - attached at the base of their tail - to defend against predators.
