Despite its name the American flamingo can be found nearly anywhere there are warm coastal habitats. These birds live in huge colonies of hundreds of thousands of individuals covering the mudflats they inhabit into a sea of pink. These mudflats commonly are salt rich estuaries that are home to few predators, giving the flamingos a safe place to gather and rear their young. These birds get their distinct bright pink coloration from their diet, of which in large part is small crustaceans.
