The great hammerhead shark is the largest of all hammerhead species, reaching a maximum known length of 20 feet (6.1 m) and weight approaching a thousand pounds (~454 kg). The species is distinguished from other hammerheads by its nearly straight hammer-shaped head, called a cephalofoil, that has a prominent indentation in the middle. These massive sharks are apex predators and can be found worldwide in warm coastal waters where they hunt for prey such as stingrays, cephalopods, crustaceans and other sharks.
Sadly, these ocean giants are listed as critically endangered globally. Great hammerheads are vulnerable to overfishing, being caught incidentally as well as being commercially targeted for their fins in longline, bottom trawl, gillnet and hook-and-line fisheries. With fins from as many as 73 million sharks ending up in the international shark fin trade every year, the future of this species remains uncertain.
