This stunning creature is called a blue glaucus! A brightly colored species of sea slug, it can be found throughout the temperate and tropical waters of the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans. They spend much of their life upside-down, floating on the surface of the ocean. This bright blue coloration, which is actually their underside, helps them to blend into the water’s surface from above.
They float along the water‘s surface, buoyed by an internal gas bubble, travelling by wind and tide. But these free floaters are not defenseless, in fact they collect stinging nematocysts from their prey, which they adopt as their own defense. Due to the blue glaucus’s small size and its wide range around the world, little is known about its conservation status.
