Southern stingrays are bottom dwelling rays that prefer sandy environments around reefs where prey is abundant. They cover themselves with sand to hide from predators or ambush prey. Like all stingrays, they sport a serrated venomous barb on their tail, which they whip at threats to defend themselves.
However, their tail is no defense from fishing pressure. Southern stingrays are both targeted and caught as bycatch in a number of fisheries worldwide, which has caused population declines.
Through your symbolic adoption of a southern stingray, you will support Oceana’s work to implement responsible fishing practices that would protect these incredible creatures from overfishing and help reduce bycatch.
