The California sea lion is the fastest sea lion species, swimming at speeds around 20 mph while hunting for prey like fish and squid. Hunting is sometimes undertaken as a multi-species team, with the sea lions working with seabirds, cetaceans, and harbor porpoises to find and corral prey. On land, California sea lions are less agile, having to reply on their front flippers to waddle along; they can be found lounging on beaches, rocky shores and docks For these social animals, the more the merrier! California sea lions gather in groups of hundreds of individuals. Groups are so large that mothers need to use specialized barks to find their pups in the crowd!
