These spotted sharks can be found off the Pacific coast of North America where they frequent shallow waters, swimming near the seafloor. Leopard sharks are named for the feline patterning that decorates their flanks. They are slender sharks, often growing to an average of five feet in length, with the females typically being larger than their male counterparts.
Unlike the traditional bite and tear technique of larger sharks, leopard sharks use suction to capture their prey, primarily hunting crustaceans and invertebrates. Once captured, they crush their prey against their specialized teeth. However, like their namesake they are opportunists, and the larger the leopard shark, the more likely it will hunt fish! But in the ocean, there is always a bigger fish, and they themselves are hunted by larger predators like the great white and seven gill sharks.
